I’ve never known a more gracious writer than Laura Frantz. Or, should I say, friend. When I asked Laura—months ago now—if I could write something based on the characters of one of her books and post it, she didn’t hesitate. And isn’t that just like her? So sweet and compassionate toward her many readers.
Oh, friend, you warmed my heart, humoring me, no doubt! I can’t thank you enough.
If you’ve not read her novels, I encourage you to start with her first, and my daughter’s favorite, The Frontiersman’s Daughter. Next, “my” favorite book of all time, Courting Morrow Little. After that you have eight more to go! And she is always writing and preparing in the background, ready for the next! Her stories are truly beloved books, written in love, showcasing the human spirit in our history, and laced with a lyrical prose that defines Laura’s writing. After you start reading, don’t be surprised if you can’t set that book down until you’re finished! Be prepared for a winter’s eve of reading, with a cup of hot tea and a warm blanket, and, most importantly, a beautiful story.
The above poem is loosely based on Morrow and Red Shirt’s story in Courting Morrow Little. I tweaked a few details to fit the poem’s cadence, but I won’t tell you what, exactly, in case you haven’t read the book and would like to. Although I love spoilers and I’m always eager to figure out the end to a movie or book, I want to respect those of you who do not.
Morrow is the Book of My Heart, as I’ve told Laura many times. How is it possible for someone pen a tale that you’ve dreamed of someone writing? That has given you so much joy as a reader, expressing what is deeply felt in your heart?
I think—and know—it is a sure Hand and leading.
This Thanksgiving, I’m filled with an incredible amount of gratitude for artists who listen to His voice and willingly express what He has called them to share. Not only do they provide ways for us to enjoy the good things of this life that He has made, but they inspire, in turn, leading us down our own paths.
God the Creator is the Author of Creativity. He has exemplified it since the beginning, expressing His artistry in each of use. I’m not sure there is anything more comforting than that, when art is in your soul. If you are one an artist, know that He cares about that spark you hold in your heart, as fledgling the flame may be. In fact, He put it there for you, His child.
May you find the courage to embrace it and use it, following those quiet nudges of expression in your life.
Dear friend, This blesses me more than you know! When I remember writing Morrow 10 years ago, I recall sitting beneath shade trees in summer and the heavenly magic I felt in her story. I rarely recall writing the others! Your beautiful tribute here means the world to me. My biggest hope was that the story would touch someone’s heart in a richly poignant way and so her story was and is for you. Thank you, thank you!
Dear Laura, It brings me great joy that you stopped by here. Thank you for your kind words, your attentiveness to your own reply and reaching out. Your writing strikes such a chord in my heart and others, far more than I am able to express. Morrow will always have a special place. I’m touched to learn how you recall the beginning of her story.
I pray you have a blessed Christmas season with you and yours!
